PDFGenius 4 App Reviews

Amazing!

Does what it says and how it says it. Thanks for the update! Great new features.

A great application, though not without room for improvement

I spent quite a bit of time looking through the options availabe lin the App Store for applications that I could use to edit PDFs. I was looking for something that would (at minimum) allow me to merge & split PDFs and remove links in the pdf. Finding a cheap or even free app that would split/merge apps wasn’t difficult— but they didnt have much functionaity beyond that— and in many cases the size of the file was increased astronomically (per reviews, or as for a couple of free apps- my experience). I was willing to pay some money for an app that did what I wanted, but $40 (as many of the apps were) was a bit steap for my wants/needs (although still significantly cheaper than Adobe Acrobrat Pro which I’ve used via work). This application, I think, was worth the money— I felt $14 was a bit much, but depending on how much use you’ll get out of the application, it could be worth the expense. Overall, I’m quite pleased with the app, I’d say I’d give it a 4.5 (but the overall ratings were low, and giving half a start isn’t possible, so I went with 5). As a quick summation of how I’ve found features: - Merging: It works great— and does not bloat the file size like many apps - Splitting: So far I haven’t gotten it to work with the “outline” option they boast, but otherwise it works fine. - Extracting: It works great. - Inserting Pages/Files: Perfect All that said, I do hope the developers keep adding to the application. For one thing, the app tends to crash/stall with files over 15 MB— you can edit those files, you just have to work slowly or the app will crash (and crash, and crash). For another, I would quite like to be able to edit the text in the app. And lastly, I would like to be able to add bookmarks in the app (if there is currently such a feature, I’m surely missing it). Overall, it’s a decent app— but it’s truly a middle of the road-cheaper option. If you need a lot of features, I fear a bigger app may be better.

Fantastic!

I came across PDF Genius by chance. I have no idea how I could have missed it before. It’s absolutely fantastic! It does exactly what I need at a ridiculously low price. I use Preview for PDF viewing so I don’t need a viewer. But for rearranging, deleting and adding pages, combining files, adding meta data and best of all, setting the initial viewing options and adding password, PDF Genius has it all and much more. It is now my favorite PDF utility. I noticed that the developer offers a huge number of very cheap pdf apps for every thinkable situation. Instead of putting them all in one expensive app you can just purchase the ones you need. Ideal for professionals like myself as well as students and even kids learning to work with PDFs. Problem is that all those apps are not visible in the right column on this page. You have to click on the developer’s name to go to a page that features all of them or go to the developer’s website. That’s a pity because people might look at PDF Genius and think that it’s missing some features. When I found the other apps the business model made sense to me. Instead of paying a huge amount of money for an app that does everything, you buy the app you need when you need it. Smart!

Must have software

If you work with pdf files, PDFGenius is a must have application. It does all kinds of useful things — merge multiple pdf files, remove unwanted pages in a pdf file, split up a file, rotate pages so you don’t have to twist your head to read vertical pages, and much more. The support is also excellent. I got some pdf files that had some king of format error in them which prevented merging. I sent two files to support and they identified the problem and gave me a simple solution — just input the bad file and do a save as. PDFGenius corrects the error in its output file so merging works fine.

Two Shortcomings Away from Five Stars

First off, this app is really awesome if you need to manipulate PDF documents, at all. It extracts, splits, saves, and more. I use it daily. It makes my work life so much easier and more efficient. I won’t spend the time going over all it can do, because there are two pretty nagging issues that potential purchasers should be aware of in case it makes a difference. 1. The “Save As” and “Extract” dialogs are not sticky. If you extract part of a PDF (which I do daily) and want to save it somewhere other than the source folder (original is saved on Desktop and want to save multiple extractions elsewhere), you’ll have to repeatedly select the destination over and over again for each save or extraction. Tiresome, but I get around that with Default Folder X. Be aware that if you don’t use another app, you’ll have to manually select the save destination each time. 2. The option to delete blank pages in the PDF file doesn’t seem to work. I have clearly blank pages in my PDF scan, but PDF Genius doesn’t detect them as blank. This might be user error, and it might not. I don’t know. I have contacted support about Issue #1 and they were fairly responsive, confirming that the save destinations are not sticky at this time, but they’ll look at adding that behavior in a future version. Right now, the app is deliberately set to revert to the source folder. Not a deal breaker for me, since I use (and love) Default Folder X to fix this annoyance. I have not contacted support about Issue #2, but I will be - in case it’s my error. Overall, I really like this app. It’s made my workflow so much better than before. Had I known about this app earlier, I would’ve used it right away. Totally worth the $10 or so when on sale!

Not what it says it is

I bought this app to do simply editing of a PDF document - change some text, move some images around and insert some images like branding. This software did not let me do any of this. All it did was allow me to delete certain pages or alter the order of the pages. If you are looking for an ‘editor’, DO NOT buy it.

Misinformed by description

I was previously using another PDF editor on the Windows side. When they said you could edit the PDF, it actually allowed me to drill into the text and manipulate it however I wanted then saving the PDF in it’s new form. This applications does little more than what I have found from free versions. The UI is nice and it is easy to use but it is impractical for what I wanted to do with it. It was only $10 but I wish I could get a refund.

does exactly what I needed to do, for a 1/5th the price

I simply needed an easy way to modify metadata. This does it and very intuitively. So glad I found this app!

would not load

it took hours to load and then did not work.

Excellent App with Excellent Support

I don’t often write reviews but the developer of this app deserves acknowledgement both for creating a very useful PDF utility and for being highly responsive to user input. PDFGenius works well and provides many useful features for manipulating PDF files. For my workflow the two most helpful features are the programs ability to automatically remove all the blank pages from a document and quickly split the original file into many individual PDFs based on user specified criteria. Yesterday I used PDFGenius to manipulate a 2,000 page PDF file. In just a few minutes I was able to remove hundreds of blank pages and split that one large file into 500 individual PDF files. What a time saver! — Good Developer: Approximately one week ago I submitted a support ticket for an improvement to the labeling function when the program is splitting one PDF file into many. I received a quick email response acknowledging my comments and saying that they would look into my suggestion. Today I awoke to a personal email explaining what changes they had made and that a new update to PDFGenius was already avialable in the App Store. So here we have a developer that listened to their customer’s feedback, provided good communication, incorporated a new feature into their app (along with an additional option that I had not even thought of) and got it up on the App Store. All in one week! I’m sure we’ll continue to see many more features being added in the future because this is a developer who cares. BUY THIS APP — I’m sure you’ll find it useful, and this developer deserves your support.

Cropping tool not what I expected

For many this program may be great. I bought this to selectively crop individual pages in a very long document. You can crop, but instead of drawing a selection box to crop quickly, you type a numerical size deduction, for each side of the page (4 x). If all pages are the same, perfect. But if each page needs differnt cropping (my situation), then it would take forever. Possibly this could be added in an upgrade?
